Faculty and Staff at SLCC have access to Microsoft Office 365, and many of these apps can be used in Canvas. This article is going to explain how you can use SharePoint to embed a Microsoft file in Canvas. This allows multiple people to view the same materials in a course, and gives the owner of the file the ability to make changes to the material that will display in courses immediately.

Important Note: Files in SharePoint and OneDrive require faculty and students to be logged into the SLCC SSO as well as go to https://www.microsoft365.com/. Because of that it may not be the best way to share content in Canvas.

This process requires three steps:

  1. Upload or create your file in SharePoint
  2. Copy the embed code from the file
  3. Insert the embed code into a Canvas page

Upload your file to SharePoint

We suggest familiarizing yourself with SharePoint before you begin. The first skill you will want to learn is how to create or upload material.

To access OneDrive, login to SLCC M365.

For help logging into SharePoint, contact the SLCC Help Desk (email helpdesk@slcc.edu or call 801-957-5555).

Copy the embed code from the file

After you have logged in and uploaded your file, you can generate the embed code. Open up the file in a new tab. From there you will:

  1. Click file
  2. Click share
  3. Click embed
This will bring you to the following popup screen:

From here you can choose the size of your presentation, and then copy the code that you will put into your Canvas page. Copy that code and move to the next step.

Insert the embed code into a Canvas page

Navigate to the Canvas page that you will embed the file, click edit, then click the embed button (which looks like a cloud). Enter the embed code in the popup window and click submit, then save your Canvas page.
