What is Respondus?
Respondus is a
company that creates assessment tools for
Canvas, among other learning management
systems. SLCC has a site license for two
primary Respondus software applications:
- Respondus Lock-Down Browser
- Respondus Monitor (See Related
Articles, top right, for more
information)
Respondus Technical Requirements
Respondus LDB and Monitor work on the
following devices:
- Windows
- Mac
- iPad (must enable in settings)
- Chromebook
- Lab Computers (with LDB
installed)
Below you will find directions for
using Respondus LockDown Browser.
Respondus LockDown Browser
Respondus LockDown
Browser is a Canvas-embedded
feature that can be enabled to help
prevent cheating during a students'
browsing options on a home computer
while they are taking online proctored
exams.
To enable Respondus Lockdown Browser
in your course, first, enable it in
the course navigation, and then in
individual quizzes within the
course.
Adding Respondus LockDown Browser to
Course Navigation
- From the left menu in your course, select Settings.
- Select the Navigation tab.
- Click and drag the Lockdown
Browser option from the lower
(hidden) list into the
upper (visible) list.
- Click Save.
- Refresh the page to confirm that
the Lockdown Browser option is
visible to students in the course's left
menu.
Selecting the quizzes to use Respondus
LockDown Browser
After a Canvas quiz is created in
your course, you can add options for LockDown
Browser.
1. Go to Course
menu and
click LockDown
Browser.
2. Click the drop-down arrow left
of the quiz name and select Settings
3. Select Require
Respondus LockDown
Browser for this
exam.
4. Require an access
code (if desired) and select
additional settings under Advanced
Settings as needed (Including advanced
settings such as iPad, external sites,
etc.)
5. Click Save + Close. The
LockDown Browser column will now
show Required for
the quiz.

Important information when using Respondus
LockDown Browser
- Can be used in any exam within
LMS
- Install app (one-time installation
required)
- Canvas Classic quizzes = must
launch application
manually
- Login to learning
system,
- Navigate to the test
- New Quizzes - Will auto launch
when they start the test
- Will be asked to close certain running
applications regardless
- No settings, distractions, functions
and etc. Must do exam in full
screen.
- Unable to quit until quiz is
submitted.
- Can exit afterwards.
