Defying Technology: How to Encourage
Authentic Student Submissions
- Diogo Lemos Soares Cosme –
Assistant Professor of
Language
- Matt Wilson – Instructional Designer, eLearning
In the age of generative AI,
students have easy access to tools
that can complete assignments on
their behalf, raising concerns
about academic integrity and
authentic learning. This session
will explore the underlying
reasons why students turn to
AI-generated content for
assignments, examining factors
such as convenience, pressure, and
lack of engagement. We will then
discuss strategies for course
design that discourage AI
dependency, including the use of
authentic assessments, interactive
assignments, and fostering deeper
student engagement. Finally, we
will share real-world examples
from our own experience,
illustrating both challenges and
successful approaches in promoting
original student work within an
online learning
environment.
