SLCC has created a Livestream Teacher Credential (formerly known as the Broadcast Teacher Credential) for all faculty who want to teach livestream (live-streamed) courses at SLCC. To earn the credential, faculty must satisfactorily complete the Livestream Teacher Credential course, which is offered through a partnership of the Faculty Development office and the Division of eLearning. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the LTC.

How was the Livestream Teacher Credential (LTC) Course developed?

The eLearning team developed this credential course with the help of many resources! We began first by reviewing SLCC’s eLET Committee Report for Livestream as a Sustained Modality which summarizes the committee’s recommendations for livestream teaching. We also held a focus group consisting of faculty across the college where we proposed a course outline and solicited ideas for course content based on faculty needs. We used this feedback and the eLET committee to create course and module level learning objectives. Course content was written using academic articles, resources from other colleges and universities, recommendations from fellow livestream teachers, and standards from the Quality Matters rubric (see our References page for a complete list). We also recorded live demonstrations of livestream teaching featuring faculty at SLCC. The course was piloted twice in fall of 2021; first with a cohort of faculty participants, and then with a cohort of eLearning team members.

Who should earn the LTC?

The Livestream Teacher Credential is required for all faculty, full-time and adjunct, who teach a livestream-mode course. All livestream faculty should earn the credential by August 1, 2025. After that date, faculty without the credential will not be allowed to teach livestream courses at SLCC.

When is the LTC course offered?

The LTC course is offered each semester, including summer.

What is the format of the LTC course?

The course is taught in a fully-online cohort that is both synchronous (live-streamed) and asynchronous so the participants can experience what it’s like to be a livestream student and learn research-based best practices and expectations of being an livestream instructor at SLCC.

There are no on-campus meetings for this course. Most of the course is asynchronous, but there a few synchronous meetings. A couple of these synchronous meeting are offered once, but they’re always recorded for those who can’t meet at that time. A couple other meetings are offered at multiple times to give you an option that fits your schedule.

Successfully completing this course counts as professional development. Graduates receive a certificate of completion and a digital badge that can be included in their professional portfolios.

Who teaches the LTC course?

The course is co-facilitated by SLCC’s eLearning team members who have online teaching experience.

How long does it take to complete the LTC course?

The course runs for five weeks and is taught entirely online. Participants spend about one to three hours per week on coursework. A veteran livestream instructor who is highly proficient in Canvas and Zoom might be able to finish the course in fewer hours, but participants who are not proficient in Canvas and Zoom may spend more time to complete this course.

What is the typical class size of the LTC course?

Class size can be anywhere from 8 to 16. The minimum of 8 participants is driven by the need for healthy peer-to-peer interactions between participants, which is critical for the course to achieve its objectives. The maximum of 16 participants is to ensure that the facilitators are not overwhelmed.

Is the LTC course "self-paced"?

The training is entirely online and mostly asynchronous, so participants have some flexibility in when they complete their assignments during the week. But this isn't a "self-study" course that participants complete “at their convenience.” The course runs for five weeks, with assignments due nearly every week. Participants are part of a cohort, and this social learning aspect is a key element of the course design. Late work is discouraged. Participants who do not satisfactorily complete all of the course assignments do not earn the credential and are asked to register for a future session.

What are the prerequisites for the LTC course?

The LTC course requires proficiency in Canvas, Zoom, and online pedagogy.

Completion of the Online Teacher Credential is a required prerequisite for the Livestream Teacher Credential. Even if you only intend to teach in a livestream environment, we build directly on the essential skills and topics discussed in the OTC course. You may not use all of these skills in your livestream course, but we've listed them here as a reminder of what you learned in the OTC course. Because you completed the OTC course, you should be able to:
  • Identify the differences between online and face-to-face learning environments
  • Orient students to the online environment
  • Maintain an active presence in the course
  • Create a safe, respectful learning community
  • Provide clear assignment expectations and effective feedback
  • Facilitate online discussions
  • Monitor student progress
  • Manage the online teaching workload
To become competent in Zoom, please register for the Zoom training offered by the Office of Information Technology (OIT). While this livestream teacher credential course will review some key elements of Zoom, it is not a Zoom tutorial, so you should already be comfortable using Zoom. You should already be able to:
  • Log in to SLCC’s instance of Zoom
  • Configure your Zoom profile
  • Join a Zoom session with audio and video
  • Schedule a Zoom session in Canvas
  • Launch a Zoom session in Canvas
  • Record a Zoom meeting in Canvas
  • Use Zoom meeting controls to share your screen, chat, start a poll, draw on the whiteboard, and launch break-out rooms
To become competent in Canvas, we strongly recommend that you register for the Canvas User Credential course. You should already be able to:
  • Modify Canvas menu items
  • Create a new module in Canvas
  • Add, publish, unpublish, rename, and delete pages
  • Add, edit, and format text on a page using Canvas’ Rich Content Editor
  • Record and embed videos on a Canvas page

Are adjunct faculty compensated for taking the LTC course?

The Faculty Development office compensates adjunct faculty for 12 hours of work after completing this Livestream Teacher Credential course. Adjunct faculty may spend more or less than 12 hours in the course, but the compensation does not change.

What are the desired outcomes of the LTC course?

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
  • Orient students to a remote learning environment
  • Model best practices for web conferencing
  • Set expectations for students in a remote learning environment
  • Discuss privacy and equity concerns related to teaching in a remote learning environment
  • Facilitate active learning in a remote learning environment
  • Teach an interactive mini lesson using synchronous technology tools
  • Demonstrate teaching strategies that promote active learning

How do I register for the LTC course?

Register for the course using SLCC's training registration system, located on the Employee tab in MySLCC. From the list of courses, look for course code DLTC. Adjunct faculty must have the approval of their associate dean to participate in the course. After registering, you will receive instructions for how to log in to the course in Canvas.

If I have more questions about the LTC, who can I talk to?
